Getting to Japan from Melbourne will soon become even easier, with Qantas increasing flights to Tokyo just in time for the country's famous winter snow season.

From December 2026 through to March 2027, the airline will boost its Melbourne–Narita service from one daily flight to 11 flights per week, adding around 30,000 seats to the route. The increase comes in response to growing demand, giving travelers more flexibility to plan winter holidays, ski trips, and festive getaways in Japan.

The timing couldn't be better for snow lovers. Japan is renowned for its legendary powder snow, with resorts across Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps attracting skiers and snowboarders from around the world every winter. Whether you're planning to carve through Niseko's deep powder, explore the slopes of Hakuba, or unwind in a steaming onsen after a day on the mountain, the extra flights make reaching Japan during peak season that little bit easier.

Interest in Japan continues to climb among Qantas passengers, with the airline reporting an 8 percent increase in travelers between October 2025 and March 2026. Around 350,000 passengers flew on Qantas' Japan services during that six-month period, highlighting the country's enduring appeal.

While winter sports are a major draw, there's plenty to experience beyond the ski fields. Visitors can warm up with seasonal dishes such as nabe and ramen, admire spectacular winter illuminations, explore historic temples dusted with snow, or soak in open-air hot springs surrounded by stunning scenery.

With more flights available during one of Japan's busiest travel seasons, the expanded Melbourne–Narita schedule offers even greater opportunities to experience everything the country has to offer.
