Japan's rainy season is also hydrangea season, and one of the best places to admire these iconic blooms is Gunma Flower Park in Maebashi. In early summer, the park celebrates with its Hydrangea Festival, showcasing around 5,000 hydrangea plants in a dazzling display of color.
Visitors can stroll through gardens filled with blue, pink, and purple hydrangeas, including varieties bred right there in Gunma Prefecture. Elegant white and blush-toned Annabelle hydrangeas, along with other seasonal flowers such as rudbeckia, herbs, and sunflowers, add even more variety as the season progresses.
One of the festival's biggest draws is that it has been designed with the rainy season in mind. Indoor attractions and family-friendly spaces allow guests to enjoy the park even when the weather isn't ideal, making it a great destination for travelers with children or anyone looking for a relaxing day out.
The festival also hosts the Hananeko Marche, an indoor event celebrating flowers and cats. Visitors can browse cat-themed crafts and goods, participate in illustration and photo contests, and enjoy activities aimed at both flower enthusiasts and feline fans.
Food is another highlight, with limited-time seasonal treats available throughout the event. Afternoon teas featuring hydrangea-inspired desserts and fresh melons, as well as workshops where participants can create their own hydrangea bouquets, add an extra touch of elegance to a visit.
