京都東山の山麓にある高台寺は、戦国時代の雄傑・豊臣秀吉の菩提を弔うために、正室・ねねが建立した。開創は、秀吉の死後、1606（慶長11）年である。斜面を使った巧みな空間構成により、進むほどに表情を変える見事な庭園が境内地に広がる。緩やかなカーブを描く小道を歩いて茶室・遺芳庵を過ぎれば、池を巡る清々しい景色。そこから坂を上ると、視線が高くなるにしたがい景観が変化していく。丘の上には、土間でつないだ珍しい二つの茶室、傘亭・時雨亭がある。茶室の奥から竹林を抜けて下れば、もう一つの茶室・雲居庵だ。
