鎌倉宮は、約150年前の1869（明治2）年に、明治天皇の命によって造営された比較的新しい神社である。1333（元弘3）年、後醍醐天皇とその皇子・護良親王は、鎌倉幕府を倒し建武の新政を実現した。しかし後の足利氏との対立の中で、親王は9ヶ月もの間土牢に幽閉され、そして命を奪われた。1867（慶応3）年、徳川幕府が大政奉還をしたことで天皇制が復活し、護良親王終焉の地に社殿が造営された。拝殿の赤い獅子頭と、木彫りの身代わり様は、厄よけのお守りである。
