瑞泉寺の初代住持であった夢窓疎石は、臨済宗の高僧で、書や漢詩、作庭などの禅芸術を極めたことでも名高い。瑞泉寺の禅庭園は1328（嘉暦3）年、53才の時の作である。夢窓疎石は、岩を穿って造った天女洞で座禅を組み、池に映る月を観想する修行を行った。また時には、富士山を望む崖の上の偏界一覧亭（非公開）に鎌倉五山の僧を呼んで、詩会を催したこともあったという。
