白川沿いの丘の上にたつ真如堂（真正極楽寺）は、天台宗の道場として1000年の歴史をもつ。荘厳な本堂と美しい三重塔の他に、この寺には大変に魅力的な二つの庭がある。書院に面した「涅槃の庭」（1988（昭和63）年に作られた釈迦入寂の場面を表した庭）と「随縁の庭」（2010（平成22）年に造営された現代的なパッチワークの庭）である。冬の日、静かに畳に座して庭を眺めていると、少しずつ心が透き通っていくような気がした。二つの庭の歴史は浅いが、ここには何とも言えない静穏な空気が流れている。
