インゲン豆を日本にもたらした中国の高僧・隠元隆琦（いんげんりゅうき）が、1661（寛文元）年に創建した京都・宇治の萬福寺。ここでは開創以来今日まで、明朝様式の作法で勤行が行われている。伽藍を結ぶ外回廊は、美しく磨かれた敷石と、整然と並ぶ六角形の釣灯籠に飾られ、主要な建物の間には方形の空間が広がる。いずれも大陸的な印象だ。三門前の放生池や参道の蓮は60種類を数え、7月から8月初めまで、次々に見頃を迎える。
