If you want to escape from the busy city of Tokyo and see something completely different, it is a good decision to visit Odaiba. It is a popular newly redeveloped waterfront area, built on an artificial island.

To reach Odaiba you would need to take a boat or a special automatic train. Be sure to sit at the front of the train. There is no driver and you can see the whole Tokyo Bay from the front window. You can catch it in Shinbashi Station and the ticket to Daiba Station is ¥320. Boat rides are more expensive. The ferry connecting from Asakusa to Odaiba costs ¥1560. There are 2- 4 boats per day. You can also take a cruise around Odaiba on yakatabune- small ships with traditional restaurants. Often referred to as Japanese "pleasure boats". They have been around since the Edo Period (1603-1868). Nowadays yakatabune are mainly used for dinning and parties. Depending on the season they also take their guests to see cherry blossoms or fireworks. Another good idea is to take a walk on the Rainbow Bridge. The view from up there is absolutely stunning.

You can spend a nice relaxing day discovering Odaiba. It is a popular shopping spot among tourists and locals. However what is best about Odaiba is the view of the bay and all surrounding water. There is a small beach with a volleyball court. On weekends you can see a lot of people coming with their families, sitting on a grass, having a picnic while admiring the Rainbow Bridge and skyscrapers emerging from the water. This is one of the best places to watch the sunset. There is a path extending next to the waterfront, farther under the bridge, ending on a small uninhabited island. It is a great route for jogging or having a long stroll. Breathe in the ocean air and unwind while walking spacious boulevards, constructed few levels above the ground. For a refreshing local taste, try crushed ice with sweet syrup, sold here on every corner.

Somehow Odaiba feels different than other places in Tokyo. It looks like a city from the future built on water. It is definitely worth seeing!
