Shizuoka City is bidding to host WorldCon 2017, the annual convention of the World Science Fiction Society. It's at the WorldCon that the Hugo Awards, SF's equivalent of the Oscars, are presented.

If the bid is successful, the convention will attract thousands of visitors to the city. The proposed venue is the Granship Convention and Arts Centre.

WorldCon is generally held in the USA, but has been held once before in Japan, in Yokohama in 2007. The decision for the 2017 host city will be made at this year's WorldCon in Spokane in the USA.
