The fun starts from October 9

Halloween at Starbucks Japan is taking a feline turn this year, with a mysterious purple cat becoming the star of the chain’s seasonal drinks and in-store activities.

Starbucks Japan is kicking off its Halloween season on October 9 with two versions of its new Blackberry Yogurt Frappuccino, both topped with cat-ear-shaped chocolate. The Black Ears version has dark chocolate ears for a slightly more mysterious look, while the White Ears version uses white chocolate for those who like a bit of added sweetness.

The drink itself combines blueberry yogurt with fruit pieces, blackberry chocolate sauce, and the sweet and tart flavors of berries. Both versions are available in Tall size only for 717 JPY to take away or 730 JPY when enjoyed in store.

The Halloween theme doesn't stop at the cup, either. Starbucks says a mysterious "phantom purple cat" will be hiding in stores, with its location changing from one store to another. Visitors can follow the cat's footprints and see if they can track it down.

There is also a Halloween treat to go with the drink. The Matcha Anko Butter Chocolate Scone Sandwich combines matcha red bean paste and butter between two pieces of black chocolate scone dough. Its slightly spooky appearance is meant to resemble a ghost sticking out its tongue, while the bitterness of the matcha helps balance the sweetness.

For an extra bit of Halloween fun, Starbucks is also running a purple cat chase game on X through October 18. Participants can interact with the cat and receive one of eight possible chase outcomes, with further images available to collect.

Starbucks Rewards members can also get chocolate chips added to the Frappuccino for free from October 9 to 15.

So, if your Japan trip happens to coincide with spooky season, this could be a fun excuse to stop by Starbucks and see if you can find the elusive purple cat while you're there.
