A visit to Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture wouldn’t be complete without a day or two at Benesse Art Site Naoshima. This contemporary art and architecture facility blends together with the pristine nature of the Seto Inland Sea to create a place for guests to stay overnight. Conceptualized in 1985, Benesse Art Site Naoshima opened its doors in 1992. Since that time there have been numerous projects toward bettering the art site as well as local communities.
This modern art museum is also the site of a resort hotel; every building in the complex has its own distinct artwork and guest rooms, creating a unique experience every time you visit. Guests staying overnight can enjoy 24-hour access to the art museum that overlooks the sea. There are also several pieces of artwork outside on the grounds and beaches around the complex. Visiting them all is a treat for the senses—especially popular is the iconic pumpkin sitting on the pier between sky and sea horizon.
