日光霧降高原の小丸山(1601m)は、丸山ハイキングコースの一部である。このハイキングコースは、急勾配に加えて滑りやすい泥濘が続き、上り・下りともかなりの集中力が必要だ。小丸山から八平ヶ原にかけては一年中霧が多く、晴れても道が乾く暇がない。しかし、山頂からの眺めはすばらしく、滑りながら、転びながら、泥だらけになって登った甲斐があった。「霧降高原」バス停から45分のコースである。
