The Toji Temple is one of the original three Buddhist temples that were built in Kyoto at the beginning of the Heian period. In the year 796, the Toji Temple was built together with the Sai-ji and Shingon-in temples. Unfortunately, Toji Temple is the only one that has survived to this day.
The historic 5-story pagoda building is home to several significant artifacts and treasures, which resulted in Toji Temple being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
About thirty years after the temple was built, Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, was appointed high priest of Toji, and the temple became one of the most important Shingon temples alongside the sect's headquarters on Mount Koya.

Kondo Hall is the main hall — Toji Temple’s largest building. Built in the 8th century, the original building burned down in 1486 and was rebuilt in 1603. Inside the main hall are three golden Buddha statues that represent the cosmology of Buddhism.
The icon of Toji Temple, the original five-storied pagoda was built in the 9th century. The pagoda that you see today was rebuilt in 1644, after a series of unfortunate lightning strikes burned down the original building. Despite its tall stature, the pagoda is held firmly using only stone foundations. Its unique building blocks have allowed it to withstand earthquakes, leaving it still standing till today.
A large sakura or cherry blossom tree stands outside the ticket office at the entrance of Toji Temple. During spring, the area around the temple and sakura tree are spectacularly lit up at night. The night illuminations under the pink cherry blossoms add to the beautiful view of the temple grounds.

京都は屈指の観光都市だ。 数千の自社仏閣に加えて、それぞれの歴史ある祭事が四季を通じて催される。 そんな賑わいが一年中絶えることのない京都だが、ハイシーズンの紅葉の時季が過ぎると、すうっと観光客の出足は落ち着いてくる。 真冬の京都の空は不思議だ。 見上げると青空が見えているのに白い雪が舞う。 北の山並みの向こうには鉛色の雲がたまっていて、福井の名田庄辺りにどっさりと雪をふるい落としていることだろう。 過ぎた一年を回想しながら、東寺を歩いた。 ７９４年。 平安京へ遷都を果たした桓武天皇は護国寺として東寺を建立した。 その１０年後、唐から帰国した空海を、時の天皇である嵯峨天皇が迎え、彼にこの東寺を授けたのである。 嵯峨天皇といえば、藤原道長による平安時代の大隆盛期にいたる繁栄の礎を築いた天皇としてその業績はあまりにも名高い。 その嵯峨天皇が空海の人と成りを見抜き、また空海としての人間としての魅力にほれ込んでこの東寺を授け与えたのだろう。 境内には講堂、金堂、そして五重塔と、重厚な建築物が長い歴史を貫いて威風堂々としてたたずんでいる。 私は東の慶賀門をくぐり、講堂の立体曼荼羅の中央に座す大日如来像を真正面に立って拝んだ。 その顔は穏やかだが、右目と左目の大きさと表情が微妙に違っている。 見つめれば見つめるほど、私は吸い込まれて、時間が凍り付いている。 右目の慈愛にあふれた優しさと、左目の理性的な冷徹さとで、私は心の奥底まで見抜かれ見透かされて身動きもできずに立ち尽くすのみだ。 如来の前は喜悦と至福の気が横溢している。 私がその前に立ったのはわずか１０数分だけだったけれども、私には一生涯の贖罪と魂の浄化を戴いたような長いながい時間に感じられた。 いつしか日はかげり、薄暮の影が見る見るうちにその濃さをましてゆく。 ねぐらを目指して飛び立つからすの鋭い声が冷たい空気を裂いた。 やがて鐘の音、ひとつ、ふたつ、みっつ。
The five-story pagoda at To-ji Temple is both beautiful, and extremely strong. Those that designed the temple figured out a way to engineer earthquake-proof features into it, without sacrificing any of its beauty.
東寺の五重塔は、美しさと強さを兼備した高層建築である。その完璧なプロポーションの裏には、現在の高層ビルにも応用される程の免震技術が施されている。また近寄ってみれば、雨によって木材が傷むのを防ぐ大きな庇を、緻密で精巧な組物が支えているのが見える。さらに、通常非公開ではあるが、初層内部では、大日如来を中心とした極彩色の立体曼荼羅が、密かに心柱を守っている。今や日本のシンボルとも言えるほど世界中に知られている東寺の五重塔。西の空に光が落ちる頃、その優美なシルエットが夕映えの空に浮かび上がる。

Held once every month at Toji Temple, is the famous Toji Temple Market. Toji Temple is located one station away from Kyoto Station on the Kintetsu-Kyoto Line, and is most famous for its five-story pagoda that is often featured on Kyoto Travel Guides. The 57m pagoda is actually the tallest pagoda in all of Japan! On the 21st of each month, hundreds and hundreds of vendors line up their vending stalls as early as 8:00 or 9:00 AM, and negotiate with buyers until roughly around 4:00 PM. This market is one of the rare markets in Japan where bargaining and negotiating is possible, so do not be afraid to ask and haggle for a lower price!

Nishi Hongan-ji is a large Buddhist temple west of Kyoto train station. Together with Higashi Hongan-ji, together with Nishi Hongan-ji, it is one of the two temple complexes of Shin Buddhism in Kyoto. It currently also serves as the main temple of the Jodo -Shin sect, one of the largest Buddhist sects in Japan with over 10,000 sub-temples across the country and 200 temples overseas. Built in 1591 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the building is a great example of the architecture of the Momoyama Period and the Early Edo Period. The two largest structures by Nishi Hongan-ji are the Goeido Hall, the largest wooden structure in Kyoto, and the Amidado Hall. Nishi Hongan-ji is also one of the 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyoto. A small Japanese garden called Shoseien is a few blocks east of Higashi Hongan-ji. Nowadays the garden with its pond and the particularly beautiful autumn colors is open to the public.
